Are you interested in the Derby Training Scheme? It you’re thinking seriously about a career in general practice – you could be about to make the best decision in your professional life since going to medical school. General practice, without a doubt, gives you the broadest clinical opportunities of all the possible medical careers – the widest scope both to do good for your patients and to feed and satisfy your intellectual curiosity about their problems and diseases. The Derby GP Specialty Training Programme is a well-established friendly and progressive training scheme. The scheme has now been in existence for over 25 years and continues to attract high quality candidates and to produce excellent young principals at the end of the three-year period. The registrars' feedback is that it is a very supportive and friendly scheme THE JOBS The majority of hospital posts are based in the new Royal Derby Hospital with some at linked Nottingham hospitals. Every effort is made to personally match your hospital posts with your previous experience. Training practices linked to the programme vary from urban to suburban to rural locations. All offer a very high level of training and support. HALF DAY RELEASE EDUCATION Throughout the three years there is a Half Day Release (HDR) Teaching Programme held on Wednesday afternoons in the Education Centre, Royal Derby Hospital site. You, the registrars, compose and lead this programme, and although guidance and support are provided by the Programme Directors and Trainers, it is expected that ownership of these sessions is held by the trainees. The registrars feel this hands on approach is far more relevant to working as a GP than didactic teaching. All meet for an informal lunch before the teaching which is a valued time for bonding with friends and colleagues. RESIDENTIAL COURSE You will enjoy attending our annual residential course for 1st & 3rd Years. This lively course combines educational activities with entertainment and sporting activities. DERBY Derby is a vibrant and attractive University City, less than 20 miles from some the most beautiful countryside in Great Britain. It lies very much in the centre of England with excellent rail and road links. CURRENT REGISTRAR COMMENTS "As a less than full time trainee I have been on the Derby scheme since 2007. I have always found the office staff incredibly supportive - especially in organising maternity leave / job shares. The programme directors always attend teaching sessions, which gives trainees direct support and guidance throughout the course. While the office staff and PDs make a scheme run well - it is the Derby trainees who make it a happy and relaxed, yet focused place to train." Dr Ruth Gooch ST3
